The Teachers’ Resources Page is here to help enhance and benefit student
learning, by providing interactive lesson on various topics. The
Washington County Historical Society’s goal is to preserve the past and
make history fun to learn. The Society is a non-profit educational
organization that serves to promote an educational program that will
bring a better understanding and appreciation to the citizens of
Washington County of their history, heritage, and natural environment.

Discovery Boxes |
|
The
Washington County Historical Society would like to let local teachers
and schools know that we have a Curator of Education. The Curator visits
schools with special presentations on historic topics. These
presentations are called Discovery Boxes. The Society has a wide variety
of educational Discovery Boxes that our Curator can use in your
classroom. These presentations are free of charge! The boxes include
hands-on activities, artifacts for students to touch, and pictures to
look at. The following information is about the different types of
Discovery Boxes. |

The
following Discovery Boxes are available: |
- Gifts of the Glaciers:
During this lesson, students will see pictures and examples of how the
glaciers affected Wisconsin and Washington County. They will learn
new terminology and fun facts.

- Tools of the Native Americans:
Students will learn about Washington County's Native Americans and their
culture. They will be able to see and touch tools used by Native
Americans in their everyday lives and compare these tools to our modern
day tools.

- Pioneer Life in Wisconsin:
Students will learn what life was like for early pioneers coming to and
living in Wisconsin. They will get the chance to see some unique
tools that were used by the pioneers.

- The American Civil War:
This lesson will examine what America was like during the Civil War.
Special emphasis will be placed on the life of soldiers, women, and
children. A lucky students will be able to try on a Union uniform!
*The artifacts include a Springfield Musket. Please let the
Curator know if you do not want the gun brought to your school.*

- American Woman Suffrage Movement*:
Students will learn about the history of the women's struggle for the
right to vote and how Wisconsin played an important part.
|
- America in World War II:
During this lesson, students will learn how America, Wisconsin, and
Washington County were affected during the war. A lucky student
will be able to try on a World War II uniform! *This box also
includes a M1911 .45 caliber pistol. Please let the Curator know
is you do not want the gun brought to your school.*

- Wisconsin State Signs & Symbols*:
Students will used their knowledge of the different signs and symbols of
Wisconsin in this fun Jeopardy-style game.
|
- Your Township Past & Present*:
By using the Society's Research Center's collection of documents and
photographs, students can see how their community has changed over the
year.
|

Presentations with a * after
the title are PowerPoint presentations. For PowerPoint
presentations, all you need to provide is a place to project the
presentation and an area to place the projector. The Curator of
Education will supply everything else! While the Discovery Boxes
can be presented to a large group of students, it is better for the
group to be small (15 to 30 students). The Curator can present up
to 4 separate times in one day at a school. If there is a topic
that is not listed which you think would be important to have as a
Discovery Box, please contact the Society and we will be happy to
try to accommodate you. |

Discovery Boxes in the Classroom |
|
Are
you interested in having a Discovery Box in your classroom for a little
longer? Then use a box from the Discovery Boxes in the Classroom
project. You can keep the box in your classroom for up to one
week. There are many benefits to this program; read on to learn
more! |
|
The following Discovery
Boxes are available to borrow and use in your classroom: Gifts of
the Glaciers, Tools of the Native Americans, and
Pioneer Life in
Wisconsin. By borrowing a box your students will be able
to spend more time with the artifacts and pictures that are available in
the box. Also, you will have time to used the box whenever you
wish. Discovery Boxes in the Classroom include: lecture notes,
artifacts, and pictures. A Discovery Box may be used for one week
(Monday to Friday) and there is no charge. To use a box in your
classroom, please call the Washington County Historical Society's
Curator of Education to make arrangements. Based on your school's
location, the Discovery Box may be dropped off at your school, but you
must return it at the end of the week. If any items within the box
are damaged or stolen there will be a fee.

Come Visit Us! |
|
Come
over to the Old Courthouse and Old Jailhouse Museums and learn about
Wisconsin's and Washington County's history. Your students will
experience the excitement of learning local history through lively
exhibits. A visit to the museums will inspire your students to
discover the stories and people that make Washington County unique.
Students can dress up like a World War II soldier, milk a cow, and sit
in old fashion school desks.

- To Visit the Museums: Visits to
the Old Courthouse and Old Jailhouse Museums may be scheduled Monday
through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please call the Society
at (262) 335-4678 to schedule a tour. All school groups must
reserve a time to visit.
- Cost of a Visit: Tours of the Old
Courthouse and Old Jailhouse Museums is $2 per person.
